Once again it is a great pleasure for the Vice-Chancellors of Sheffield’s two universities to welcome you to National Science and Engineering Week.
National Science and Engineering Week is a celebration of the very best in British research and innovation. We are very pleased to note the significant contribution made by staff from both universities to this extensive programme – which is still one of the largest in the United Kingdom. However, in addition to the contribution made by Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield to the many talks, are activities offered by local industry, museums and other organisations.
Of particular note this year is the contribution being made by STEM Ambassadors. This national initiative is co-ordinated by the STEMPOINT based in the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University as part of its work in bringing schools, colleges and the general public into contact with exciting and interesting examples of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The work of organising National Science and Engineering Week in South Yorkshire is shared between staff from the two universities and is an excellent example of the collaborative spirit that exists between us. During these difficult financial times the role of science and technology is of increasing importance to the manufacturing economy of South Yorkshire and we believe that National Science and Engineering Week provides a magnificent opportunity for the people of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster to engage with science and technology and so build towards a more prosperous future.
